DURANGO, Colo. – June 16, 2015 – Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics
Gary Hunter and Head Golf Coach
Guy Begay accepted a check today on behalf of the Skyhawks women's golf program from the Durango Chamber of Commerce.
"Girls Gone Golfing is designed to introduce women to the great game of golf and help the ladies who already get golf ready with a little instruction in a fun, relaxed environment," said Begay. "We are thankful to have the continued support of Rita (Simon) and the Durango Chamber of Commerce and all the area businesses who participate in the event."
More than $1,000 was raised by the Girls Gone Golfing event on June 5, which is an annual golf outing for women that features a golf clinic for beginners and intermediate players, a golf scramble, and networking opportunities. The event is held every year at Hillcrest Golf Course.
"It is very exciting to be able to contribute funds to the newly formed Fort Lewis College women's golf team," said Rita Simon, Chamber Manager for the Durango Chamber of Commerce and founder of the Girls Gone Golfing event. "The Girls Gone Golfing event, now in its ninth year, is all about getting women on the golf course to do business and network similar to their male counterparts. It seemed like the perfect fit to ask the GGG women attendees to help these female student-athletes become successful as the first ever FLC Women's golf team. I am very proud to be part of this event, proud of the women who contributed and proud of the FLC Women's golf team."
The 2014-15 marked the first season Fort Lewis College sponsored women's golf as a varsity program.
