Melissa Knight-Maloney set the standards for future Fort Lewis College cross-country runners to follow during her one year of competition at Fort Lewis College in 1988.

She won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's individual championship, and was the only woman outside of national powerhouses Adams St. and Western St. to accomplish that feat at the time of her induction.

Knight-Maloney also earned All-America and Academic All-America honors at the 1988 NAIA National Championships, becoming the first Fort Lewis College's women's runner to do either. She was also the 1988-89 recipient of the Fort Lewis College Senior Scholastic Award.
