Vigil Scores Five Goals in Win

March 23, 2010 was a VERY important day in Fort Lewis Women's History - it was the day the program won the first game ever!

The Fort Lewis College Women's Lacrosse program, in the middle of their second season, overcame all obstacles and proved to themselves that they can win.

Morrisville player, Cybil Stanton, scored the first goal. Followed by Fort Lewis Freshman Alyssa Vigil scoring on her 8 meter and thirty seconds later Senior Morgan Mangnall put one in the back of the net scoring on her 8 meter, putting the Skyhawks up 2-1 within the first 4 minutes in the game. Morrisville tied it up at 2-2. Then Fort Lewis went on a scoring spree! Vigil scored her second goal on the day, Courtney Hancock added a point with her successful 8 meter, then the fast and furious Sophomore Jess Adams had a open lane to cage, bringing the Skyhawks to a 5-2 lead. All this excitement in the first 10 minutes. Morrisville added five more goals in the half. While Vigil put up 2 more points, Adams tallied another goal, and Freshman Libby Weiner made a strong drive to cage ending the half FLC 9 Morrisville 7. Freshman Goalie, Genna Waugh, was ready to play. She recorded 5 saves in the half. Game went back and forth the entire half.

"Half time there was so much energy and happiness. I saw, for the first time, that the team BELIEVED they could and were going to win. It was the longest half time. The team just wanted to get back out there, finished the game, and win!" said Coach Queisser.

The second half was a bit slower paced than the first with only 5 goals total. Morrisville's Jennifer May scored right away, FLC's Vigil had the her fifth goal of the game, Morrisville answered back making the scored 10-9. With 7:53 left on the clock, Fort Lewis Freshman Paige Juneau, took the ball to the net scoring her first of the day. Morrisville's Carmen Velazquez scored the last goal of the game, making the final score 11-10. FORT LEWIS WIN!

Coach Queisser remarked - "I have never been more proud of this team. They put their heart and soul into this game and this team. With everyone that has turned thei back on this team, they rose above all the obstacles andj just played lacrosse. We are excited for the next 4 games of out season."

Goalie, Waugh, ended the game with a 44% save percentage. Career Highs - Vigil: 5 goals, 3 draw controls. Adams: 2 goals, 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers, Arielle Blankenbuhler: 4 ground balls, and Stephani Pitts: 4 ground balls.

This is a day the 14 members of this lacrosse team will never forget.
