April 21, 2010. Phoenix, AZ. - The Fort Lewis College men's golf team shot a third-round 290 to finish with a three-round total of 881, good for third at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Spring Championships on Tuesday in Florence, Ariz.
Western New Mexico carded a three-day team total of 873 to take home the tournament crown, finishing four shots better than UC-Colorado Springs. WNMU's Gordon Webb and UC-Colorado Springs' Chris Shoop both finished at 4-under par to tie for medalist honors.
David Schroeder was low individual for the Skyhawks, shooting a 2-over 218 to tie for fifth place, finishing the tournament with a 71 on Tuesday.
“He played well," FLC coach Bud Andersen said of Schroeder. “He had a little struggle in the second round (77) … but he played well. All in all, I think we did pretty well."
Andersen lamented the fact a first-round team score of 300 may have cost his team a shot at the overall title. FLC shot 291 and 290 the next two rounds.
“If we play a little better first round, we have a chance to win the tournament," he said.
Gavin Lyons shot a final-round 73 to finish in seventh place with a 219 for FLC. Teammates Michael Adams and Devin Schreiner, a former Durango High School golfer, finished with 222 and 223, respectively. Doug Manske finished with a 237.
Andersen said he was hopeful the finish would allow FLC to move up a spot from seventh to sixth in the next regional rankings, potentially allowing for better matchups in the postseason. The coach added his team seems to be picking up its game as the season winds down.
“If we all play well each round, we've got a good shot to make nationals," Andersen said.
