Hagen to serve as director of operations

DURANGO, Colo. — Chris McGovern has been named interim director of coaching and Dave Hagen has been named director of operations for the Fort Lewis College cycling team, Skyhawk Director of Athletics Kelly Higgins announced today.

McGovern was initially hired on January 10 as men's road coach and coordinator of the road cycling team for the spring season.

Jimmy Kight, who was also hired on January 10 as women's coach, will remain on board through the road season.

“This is an important structural change to better describe what the staff do and move toward the future,” said Higgins. “The timing was important to keep the momentum that FLC cycling has going into the 2011 road nationals.”

McGovern is currently owner and head coach of Cycleution. He is a USA Cycling certified coach, working with all levels of riders from newcomers to seasoned veterans. He has more than 30 years experience as a racer, from the BMX level on up to the professional level for the Zaxby's, Jelly Belly, HealthNet and Sierra Nevada teams.

McGovern also helped the Skyhawks finish second in the nation at the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclocross Championships in Bend, Ore., last December.

Hagen, a 1991 FLC alumnus, has been team manager for the past seven years. He's worked in the cycling industry locally for both Yeti cycles and Bouret sportswear. He also owned Durango Mountain Bike Camp from 1995 through 2000.

Hagen has raced in the region for more than 25 years in the road, mountain bike and cyclocross disciplines.

Fort Lewis College is home to the nation's elite cycling program. The Skyhawks have won 17 USA Cycling national championships in the mountain biking, cyclocross and road disciplines. The 2010-11 team won the national championship in mountain biking, finished second in cyclocross and third in track racing.
