Skyhawks have 14 different players score in 23-2 rout of Johnson & Wales

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season in grand fashion on Sunday, tallying 23 goals in a 23-2 rout of Johnson and Wales University at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch.

The 23 goals were the most for the Skyhawks (1-0 overall) since a 23-1 victory over Rockhurst on March 17, 2014 and was one shy of the program's single-game record for goals scored of 24, set in a 24-2 win over Adams State University on March 19, 2011.

"It felt really good to be on the field finally. We've been practicing for three months and were finally able to see what we can do against another team's defense and somebody else's attack," said FLC head coach Ashley Travis, who picked up her first win with the Skyhawks' program. "We were able to get a lot of players some experience and it was really exciting to see what we did today with all the freshmen and newcomers put some points up."

Fort Lewis wasted little time grabbing control Sunday, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on the Wildcats (1-4 overall) through the game's opening seven minutes and ballooning the lead to 10-0 by the 9:27 mark.

The Skyhawks would end up taking a 15-0 lead into the half and finished the afternoon with 14 different goal scorers, led by freshman Hallie Marker with four goals and an assist on six shot attempts.

"Hallie was really aggressive today, real aggressive in the defensive end, able to cause a lot of turnovers to get the ball down field and score," Travis said of Marker, who added three ground balls Sunday. "She had really good placements on her shots and did a nice job in her freshman debut."

Fort Lewis had six additional players finish with multi-goal games, with senior Delaney Benson, juniors Abby Escandon and Mia White, and the freshmen trio of Makena Carter, Abigail Merchant and Liv Crawford all add two goals apiece.

FLC also received goals from Maren Clark, Abby Bartles, Ann Nelson, Autumn Rymerson, Kenna Melvin, Sarah Heathershaw and Brooklyn Merchant.

"Being able to have that many goal scorers really helps us going into the season that we don't just have one offensive threat," Travis said. "We have multiple people who can help us score goals this season and I'm excited about what we can do moving forward."

The Skyhawks' offensive efficiency and pressure was evident as they drew 16 fouls on the Wildcats, leading to 16 free position shots. FLC capitalized as the team finished 9-of-16 on those scoring chances.

"Our offense did a really nice job of drawing free position shots today and really working on our pump fakes and trying to draw the shooting space call," Travis said. "We did a nice job moving the ball and getting where we needed to be to draw those fouls. And then we did a good job placing those shots."

Defensively, the Skyhawks were able to force 22 turnovers and racked up a 21-6 advantage in ground balls, while the goalkeeper duo of senior Daris Wienk and freshman Averi Basso limited the Wildcats to two goals on eight total shots.

Wienk got the start and made saves on all three shots she faced in the first half, while Basso added two saves in the second half in her first collegiate appearance.

"We did a really good job on our re-defend and not letting (JWU) have many scoring opportunities," Travis said. "And our goalkeepers played well. They made the saves they needed to make and cleared the ball out quick."

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward a Tuesday afternoon matchup against Cornell College (2-1 overall), set for 1 p.m. at Aurora Sports Park in Denver.
