DURANGO, CO - October 12, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College volleyball team defeated Regis University in four sets (30-28, 30-24, 27-30, 30-23) Friday night as they claimed sole possession of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The Skyhawks improve to 14-6 overall and 10-2 in the RMAC, while the Rangers fall to 8-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
After taking game one and two the Skyhawks seemed to be in control of game three with a 13-6 lead, but the Rangers rallied back and stole the game. Fort Lewis did not re-gain control of the match until midway through the fourth game. After trailing 6-12 early in the game, the Skyhawks battled back and tied the game at 19 a piece. Fort Lewis then scored 11 points and held the Rangers to just four as they cruised to their ninth win in their last 10 games.
Freshman Chelsea Flaming (Durango, CO/Durango) led the team with 15 kills on 35 attempts with only two errors (.371 hitting percentage), while Nicole Schwab (Loveland, CO/Loveland) recorded 14 kills and three blocks in the victory. Schwab brought her career total for kills to 1,322, just 16 away from tying the all-time Fort Lewis record of 1,338 currently held by Moreen Baylis.
Fort Lewis grabbed a total of 92 digs and had three players with 20 or more digs, Adrianne Dettler (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer), Sara Feehan (Berthoud, CO/West Georgia) and Anna Mekeel (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer).
The Skyhawks return to action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. as they host UC-Colorado Springs in a battle for first place in the RMAC.
