DURANGO, CO - October 14, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the NCAA Division II defending National Champions, Metro State this afternoon. The Skyhawks fall to 8-4-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Roadrunners improve to 11-3-1 on the year and 6-1-1 in the conference.
The Skyhawks found themselves on the losing end of two first-half goals and a very closely played match statistically Sunday afternoon. The Skyhawks let in two goals in the span of eight minutes in the first half and couldn't regain momentum the rest of the contest.
Katie Kilbey opened scoring in the 21st minute for Metro, while Becca Mays added the Roadrunners second in the 29th minute.
Metro out-shot the Skyhawks 11 to 10, but the Skyhawks had three more corner kick opportunities. Fort Lewis recorded 12 fouls compared to Metro's 10.
"They're a good team," said head coach Damian Clarke. "They're atop the conference and have experience on their side. I thought we played fairly well, but needed to capitalize on our opportunities."
The Skyhawks return to action in one week on Sunday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Colorado Christian.
