DURANGO, CO - October 16, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College volleyball team defeated visiting Mesa State on Tuesday night in four sets. Fort Lewis improves to 17-6 overall and 12-2 in conference play, while the Mavericks fall to 11-11 overall and 7-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
After trading the first two games the Skyhawks took games three and four to record thier 11th win in their last 12 matches. The Skyhawks took game one 30-26 after being down a majority of the start of the game. Fort Lewis tied the game at 15 and rattled off four unanswered point to take control of the game.
Game two, the Mavericks took by the same score. Fort Lewis led the start of the game until the Mavericks grabbed the lead after tying the game at 13. The Skyhawks were down 29-22 and scored four points before suffering the loss.
In game three, the turning point came when the Skyhawks scored four unanswered points after the Mavericks tied the score at 18. Fort Lewis went on to win 30-26 again.
Game four the Skyhawks controlled from the first serve to the end when they defeated their arch-rivals 30-22.
LeeAnne Greenwade (Concho, AZ/St. John's) led the Skyhawks with 13 kills, while Nicole Schwab (Loveland, CO/Loveland), Jessica Bailey (Ridgefield, WA/Prairie) and Sara Feehan (Berthoud, CO/West Georgia) all recorded 12 kills a piece. Bailey went 12-for-22 with only two errors to lead the team with a .455 hitting percentage.
Cora Vorwald (Durango, CO/Durango) had her best night of the season with a match-high 10 total blocks. The Durango native added seven kills on 19 attempts.
Melissa Childs (Vista, CA/Rancho Bueno Vista) continues her excellence at the setter position as she handed out 53 assists, while recording no ball handling errors. Adrianne Dettler (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) led the Skyhawks' back row with 17 digs.
The Skyhawks return to action on Friday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m. when they host Western State for 2007 Homecoming.
