Men's Soccer Wins 10th of the Season

DURANGO, CO - October 19, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 3-2 tonight on a goal in the 89th minute. The Skyhawks improve to 10-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Orediggers fall to 9-6-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the conference.

David Oberholtzer's (Tempe, AZ/Yavapai CC) goal in with one minute and 32 second left in regulation lifted the Skyhawks over the third place team in the RMAC tonight. In a rare night game, played on the tough field at Colorado Mines, the Skyhawks secured their second place RMAC standing for the time being.

The Skyhawks scored first in the 10th minute when Jamie Cunningham (Scottsdale, AZ/Pinnacle) found the back of the net off a Tom Settle (Portsmouth, Eng./Cams Hill).

The Orediggers then tied the score right after halftime, in the 50th minute. They then scored their second of the game and took the 2-1 lead in the 61st minute off Cody Moore goal.

Fort Lewis battled back and tied the game back at two in the 72nd minute when Settle served another corner kick which found Kieran Hall (Blackburn, Eng./Queen Park) for his seventh goal of the season. Oberholtzer's unassisted goal came 17 minutes later to give the Skyhawks their 10th victory of the season.

Zane Wells (Durango, CO/Durango) recorded the victory in the net for the Skyhawks, while making five saves and facing 14 shots.

Fort Lewis was out-shot 14 to 11, but the Skyhawks had double the chances on corner kicks (12 to 6), which ended up being the Orediggers demise.

Six yellow cards and a red card where given out in Friday's match. Cunningham received the red card, after first recieving a yellow card, while Oberholtzer, Hall and Jeff Jennings (Aurora, CO/Grandview) were also credited with yellow cards. The Orediggers team was credited with a yellow, as well as Jason Decker.

Fort Lewis returns to action Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Lakewood against Colorado Christian University.
