Men's Soccer Closes Regular Season with a 1-0 Victory

Skyhawks Clinch Second in the Conference

DURANGO, CO - October 28, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated the hosting Thunderwolves of CSU--Pueblo 1-0 this afternoon in their final regular season contest. The Skyhawks improve to 13-5-1 overall and 10-3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Thunderwolves fall to 6-11-2 overall and 5-7-2 in the RMAC.

Jamie Cunningham (Scottsdale, AZ/Pinnacle) scored the game's lone goal in the 23rd minute off an assist from Tom Settle (Portsmouth, Eng./Cams Hill) who served the ball in from a corner kick. It was Cunningham's third of the season and Settle's 14th assist of the season which helps him stay in fourth place nationally in assists per game.

The Skyhawks unleashed 10 second-half shots with four being saves, while the Thunderwolves kicked eight, five of which needed Skyhawk goalkeeper, Zane Wells (Durango, CO/Durango) to stop them. Wells knabbed eight saves in total and recorded his seventh shutout of the season.

With the win the Skyhawks secured the second place seed in the RMAC Championship Tournament to be play Friday, November 2nd and Sunday, November 4th in Denver, hosted by Metro State. Fort Lewis plays the third ranked Rangers of Regis University at 2:30 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. The Rangers won their final four games to hold on to the third seed. The teams met twice this season with the home team winning each contest.
