Skyhawks Clinch Home Playoff Game

DURANGO, CO - October 28, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team defeated visiting Mesa State College 1-0 this afternoon in their final regular season contest of the year. The Skyhawks, who clinched the fourth seed and a home quarterfinals game on Wednesday, improve to 11-4-3 overall and 6-4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Mavericks conclude their season with a 9-9-2 overall record and a 4-7-1 conference record.

A Hayley Hollenga (Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy) goal in the 14th minute gave the Skyhawks the win, lifted them into fourth place in the RMAC and gave them the opportunity to host the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Hollenga received a through ball from Lorin Anderson (Durango, CO/Durango) just outside of the goal keeper's box, she took three touches and riffled the shot between the keeper and the near post. That was all the Skyhawks would need as Bree Baker (Penrose, CO/Canon City) made two huge second half saves to keep the Skyhawks in the lead.

The Skyhawks had many more opportunities, including three in the second, which were saved by the Mesa State keeper.

Baker recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

Fort Lewis out-shot Mesa 12 to four, including a six to zero first half difference.

The Skyhawks will host Regis University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The winner win advance to the semifinals in Denver, hosted by Metro State.
