DURANGO, CO - October 6, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College football team fell 14-7 to Adams State College this afternoon in the annual Musket Game. The Skyhawks fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Grizzlies improve to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC.
Sam Powell (San Diego, CA/Grossmont CC) returned an Adams State fumble 41-yards with 2:25 left in the second quarter for the Skyhawks only score of the afternoon. The touchdown and extra point evened the scored at seven, heading into halftime.
A third quarter 10-yard pass from Bobby Washington to Dave Copelan scored the game's final points as the Grizzlies grabbed the Musket game for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
The Skyhawks tallied 161 total yards on 55 plays, while the Grizzlies recorded 221 yards on 72 plays. No player ran, threw or caught for more then 100 yards on both teams.
Joel Johnson (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) led Fort Lewis with 65 yards on 19 carries, while Dave Nieman (Chino Hills, CA/Chaffey CC) led the Skyhawks' passing attack with 72 yards on 7-of-14 passing. Brandon Cummings (Lakewood, CO/Alameda) grabbed three passes for 37 yards to lead the Skyhawk receivers.
Brett Oldenkamp (Hesperia, CA/Chaffey CC) led the Fort Lewis defense with 11 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack. Justin Cuttbirth (Fontana, CA/Chaffey CC) added 10 tackled of his own, including one sack. Nick Becker (Thornton, CO/Legacy) tallied nine total tackles, two sacks, three tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles and one pass break up on the afternoon.
