DURANGO, CO - November 2, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College volleyball team defeated Western New Mexico in four games (30-21, 23-30, 30-27, 30-23) tonight, avenging their loss earlier this season in Silver City, NM. The Skyhawks improve to 20-6 overall and 16-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Mustangs fall to 16-10 overall and 12-6 in the RMAC.
Nicole Schwab's (Loveland, CO/Loveland) 21 kills and three blocks boosted the Skyhawks over the Mustangs Friday night. She tallied just four errors on 39 attempts to record a .436 hitting percentage.
LeeAnne Greenwade (Concho, AZ/St. John's) led the Skyhawks rally in game four with five kills, including the match-winner, on eight attempts. She nailed 14 kills in the match on 32 attempts with just four errors (.312 hitting percentage).
After the Skyhawks took game one, the Mustangs grabbed game two. The two teams went back and forth for most of the first half of the game until the Mustangs tied the score at 18. They rattled off four unanswered points to take the commanding lead late in the game. The Skyhawks battled back and got as close as 20 to 23, but the Mustangs put it away from seven of the next 10 points.
Game three, quite possibly the most entertaining game of the night, saw the Skyhawk jump out to an early lead, but the Mustangs battled back and tied the score at 12. Four consecutive Skyhawk points gave Fort Lewis the 16-12 lead, but once against the Mustangs battled back and closed the lead to one, 18-17. The Skyhawks once again took control and held a 26-20 lead with the victory in site. The resiliant Mustangs came back and tied the score at 27. The Skyhawks scored the final three points to grab the crucial game three.
Melissa Childs (Vista, CA/Rancho Bueno Vista) had 61 assists, while Jessica Bailey (Ridgefield, WA/Prairie) added 10 kills. Adrianne Dettler (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) led the team with 27 digs, while Anna Mekeel (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) led the team with four service aces.
The Skyhawks return to action tomorrow night in the Whalen Athletic Center as they host their final match of the season against New Mexico Highlands at 7:00 p.m. If the Skyhawks win they are guaranteed a share of the 2007 RMAC regular season title. Saturday will also be senior night as the Skyhawk recognize their six graduating seniors.
