Skyhawks Fall to Western New Mexico

DURANGO, CO - November 3, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College football team lost 43-21 this afternoon to the Western New Mexico Mustangs. They fall to 1-8 over all and 1-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Mustangs improve to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC.

In their loss today, the Skyhawks scored 21 second-quarter points to bring the score to 29-21 at the half. 14 unanswered third quarter points by the Mustangs sealed the victory, their fourth of the season.

The Skyhawks racked up more then 300 yards (302 total yards), but were overshadowed by the Mustangs who amassed an amazing 593 total yards, 301 rushing and 292 passing.

Tom Stoffel (Boulder, CO/Fairview) started the game at quarterback and suffered an injury, forcing the already injured Dave Nieman (Chino Hills, CA/Chaffey CC) into the quarterback spot. He went 12-of-25 for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jeff Polley, the Mustangs quarterback, threw for 292 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-37 passing.

Three Mustangs had over 50 yards rushing, while Joel Johnson (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) led the Skyhawks rushing attack with 79 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

Dion Myers (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach City) scored six of the Skyhawks 21 points on a 93-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown. Justin Cuttbirth (Fontana, CA/Chaffey CC) blocked the 27-yard attempt.

The Skyhawks conclude their 2007 season next Saturday when they travel to Ogden, UT to take on Weber State at 1:05 p.m.
