DURANGO, CO - November 3, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College volleyball team defeated New Mexico Highlands University in three games tonight as they wrapped up their 2007 regular season and a share of the 2007 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Regular Season Championship. The Skyhawks improve to 21-6 overall and 17-2 in the RMAC, while the Cowgirls 4-24 overall and 2-17 in conference play.
The 2007 Skyhawk seniors played their final home match of their careers Saturday night, it proved to be a memorable one. A 30-14 crushing come-from-behind win and a 30-25 routine win were all a part of Saturday's quick contest in the Whalen Athletic Center.
The Skyhawks grabbed game one 30-25 in a game which they led in the entire time. Game two, the most exciting game of the evening, the Skyhawks were down 6-0 and 7-1 before rattling off 29 points and holding the Cowgirls to just seven. Game three put a nice cap on the six senior's careers at Fort Lewis, a 30-21 routine game in which they never trailled.
Nicole Schwab (Loveland, CO/Loveland) tallied 11 kills on 21 attempts with just two errors (.429 hitting percentage). The senior added eight blocks in the match as well. LeeAnne Greenwade (Concho, AZ/St. John's) recorded nine kills, while fellow senior Sara Feehan (Berthoud, CO/West Georgia) made five kills, including the match-winner in game three.
Temple Levings (Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls), Adrianne Dettler (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) and Anna Mekeel (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) combined for 30 digs in the match, also their final contest in the Whalen Athletic Center.
Melissa Childs (Vista, CA/Rancho Bueno Vista) handed out 36 assists and stopped four attacks.
The Skyhawks are the 2007 RMAC Co-Champions with Nebraska-Kearney, who defeated Colorado Christian tonight. They'll travel to Kearney next Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the 2007 RMAC Volleyball Championship where they'll face the #7 on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (2:30 p.m. Central Time). The winner will advance to the semifinals which will be played on Saturday.
