Women's Basketball Cruises Past Grand Canyon

DURANGO, CO - December 1, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated visiting Grand Canyon University 91-57 Saturday night. The Skyhawks improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Antelopes fall to 3-3 on the season.

With 14:36 left in the first half, Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) scored a layup to tie the game at nine. The Skyhawks took that momentum and carried it the remainder of the gaming and led for the final 34 minutes. The layup was part of a 8-0 run by the Skyhawks midway through the first half. Rosel and Audrey George (Longmont, CO/Niwot) both scored four point during the run. The Skyhawks continued their race ahead and led by as many as 16 in the first half. They led 15 (41-26) at the break.

Fort Lewis continued to pile on the points in the second half as they continued to open a larger lead. At the buzzer, they led by 34 and were on an 11-3 run.

Every player of the Skyhawks roster saw action in the game. They out-rebounded the Mavericks 43 to 22 and shot 80% from the line, 56.4% from the field and 48.1% from downtown.

Rosel finished with a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and one block in 29 minutes. The sophomore also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

Katie Mackey (Eaton, CO/Eaton) finished with 16 points, six boards and went 6-for-8 from the line. Freshman Abby Jackson (Tulsa, OK/Memorial) added a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arch with six assists, while George finished with 10 points and eight boards.

The Skyhawks return to action next week in Denver to open their 2007-08 conference schedule. Games scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday against Metro State and Colorado Christian. Both games can be heard live on KIUP 930 AM or www.radiodurango.com.
