DURANGO, CO - August 26, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team defeated Montana State University-Billings 1-0 this afternoon with a goal 5 minutes into overtime. The Skyhawks improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-1-0.
Sara Egbom (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian) netted her third goal of the season with a 30-yard blast that sailed just out of the reach of the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper, bounced off the crossbar and gradually dribbled in the goal. That was all the Skyhawks needed as they grabbed the victory and handed Billings their first lost of the season. The Skyhawks also redeemed a 0-1 overtime loss to the Yellow Jackets from a year ago.
After a 45-minute rain delay midway through the first half, the Skyhawks came out fired up. They held consistant pressure in and around the Yellow Jacket box, but could not finish.
As the second half wore on, the Yellow Jackets saw more continuous pressure as the Skyhawk hurrled numerous strikes on goal. With under a minute left in regulation, the Skyhawks had their best opportunity when freshman Hayley Hollenga (Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy) found herself one-on-one with the MSU-Billings goalkeeper. She was called offsides.
The game-winner came off a foul which was called off because the Skyhawks retained possession. Egbom riffled her shot as the referee gave the "play on" signal.
The Skyhawks out-shot MSU-Billings 14 to five and shot seven more balls on goal. Bree Baker (Penrose, CO/Canon City) recorded her first shutout of the season, while Egbom netted her second game-winning goal of her freshman season.
The Skyhawks return to action Friday, August 31st against South Dakota. The teams will play on a neutral field in Grand Junction with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. Fort Lewis returns home on September 14th at 1 p.m. when they host Adams State in a pivotal conference match up.
