DURANGO, CO - August 30, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College Skyhawk men's soccer team defeated the hosting Mavericks of Mesa State 2-0 this afternoon in their 2007 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) season opener.
In the 62nd minute, the Skyhawks broke the Mavericks' back with a goal off the head of Paul Sanchez (Littleton, CO/Columbine) who received a direct kick from Tom Settle (Fareham, Eng./Cams Hill).
The Skyhawks continued to pressure the first-year program at Mesa State with 13 second-half shots. They broke through the Mavericks' defense again in the 85th minute when redshirt freshman, Byron Cephers (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill) centered a pass that found the foot of senior Kieran Hall (Blackburn, Eng./Queens Park). Hall scored his second of the season and sealed the Skyhawks' victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zane Wells (Durango, CO/Durango) stopped five shots and recorded his second shutout of the 2007 season.
The Skyhawks out-shot the Mavericks 23 to 10 and attempted eight more corner kicks then Mesa State (10-2).
The Skyhawks return to action one week from tomorrow on Friday, September 7th at 5:00 p.m. in Denver against arch-rival Metro State. The Skyhawks defeated the Roadrunners four times last year including a 3-0 victory in the First Round of the NCAA Division II tournament.
