Skyhawks Grab Home Opener

DURANGO, CO - September 14, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated Colorado Christian University this afternoon in their 2007 home opener. The Skyhawks improve to 3-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Cougars fall to 0-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play.

Nick Kirchhof (Centennial, CO/Grandview) scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute to give the Skyhawks the victory.

The game remained 1-0 for a majority of the rest of the game until David Barden (South Haven, MI/South Haven) scored his second goal of the season off a header in the 89th minute. Barden received an excellent crossing pass from Skyhawk senior Kieran Hall (Blackburn, Eng/Queens Park) who was credited with the assist.

Barden and goalkeeper Zane Wells (Durango, CO/Durango) recorded the double assist on the Skyhawks first goal.

Fort Lewis out-shot the Cougars 28 to one in the victory, including a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Wells recorded his third shutout of the season with the win.

The Skyhawks return to Dirks Field on Sunday at Noon. The game can be heard live on KIUP 930 AM and at www.radiodurango.com. Sunday's game will also be dedicated to Fort Lewis College President, Dr. Brad Bartel. President Bartel is currently in Denver receiving treatment for myeloma, a rare form of cancer. Mercy Medical Center will be holding an auction to raise money support cancer.
