DURANGO, CO - September 15, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated the Colorado School of Mines 4-1 earlier this afternoon in their third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season. The Skyhawks improve to 5-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the RMAC, while the Orediggers fall to 6-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play.
The Orediggers opened scoring in the 23rd minute when John Moseley scored an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season.
The remainder of the first half remained scoreless. The Skyhawks opened the second half and unleashed a flury on the Orediggers net. Just 27 seconds after the second half began, David Barden (South Haven, MI/South Haven) headed a ball to the back of the Mines net, his third of the season. Casey Roberts (Farmington, NM/Farmington) and Tom Settle (Portsmith, Eng./Cams Hill) assisted on the set play.
In the 53rd minute, Jamie Cunningham (Scottsdale, AZ/Pinnacle) headed away his first goal of his career from Settle. Nick Kirchhof (Centennial, CO/Grandview) then scored the Skyhawks' third goal on a controversial call. He received a pass from Barden then approached the net, where Colorado Mines fans and coaches felt he had a hand ball. Their was no call and Kirchhof scored his second of the season.
The Skyhawks' final goal was scored by senior Kieran Hall (Blackburn, Eng./Queens Park) who netted his own rebound off a penalty kick.
The Skyhawks have now beaten their arch-rival, Mines, five times straight and will meet the team one more time in Golden on October 19th.
The Skyhawks return to Dirks Field, Friday, September 21st at 3:30 p.m. against CSU-Pueblo.
