Skyhawks Drop First Game in '07

DURANGO, CO - September 16, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team fell 0-2 to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers earlier this evening in their first loss of 2007. The Skyhawks fall to 5-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, while the Orediggers improve to 6-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the RMAC.

Mines scored a goal in the 30th minute off a misshandled kick from within the Skyawks box. 10 minutes later the game was postponed for over an hour due to a thunderstorm in the area.

Just seconds after the re-start, the Orediggers scored their second and final goal off another miss-handled ball just in front of their net.

For the remainder of the game the Skyhawks tried to play catch up, but poor field conditions and a strong Oredigger defense raddled off six second-half shots by the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks out-shot the Orediggers 13 to seven and won the corner kick battle eight to three.

"It's a tough loss at home," said head women's soccer coach Damian Clarke. "But we learn from this and look forward to next weekend."

The Skyhawks return to action Friday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m. against CSU-Pueblo on Dirks Field.
