DURANGO, CO - September 18, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College vollyball team defeated Mesa State College 3-1 (30-28, 38-40, 30-24, 30-19) ealier tonight in their eighth victory of the season. The Skyhawks improve to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the RMAC after tonight's match, while the Mavericks fall to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
After taking game one, the Skyhawks rallied from three down in game two to force the game into extra points. The Mavericks prevailed in the long game with a 40-38 victory. The Skyhawks cruised and finished the match with wins in game's three and four.
Nicole Schwab (Loveland, CO/Loveland) led the team with 23 kills on 50 attempts and only three errors. She also tallied eight blocks in the match.
Jessica Bailey (Ridgefield, WA/Prairie) and Chelsea Flaming (Durango, CO/Durango) each recorded 10 kills in the win, while Flaming added two blocks.
Melissa Childs (Vista, CA/Rancho Bueno Vista) dished out 51 assists in the match. Sara Feehan (Berthoud, CO/West Georgia) and Adrianne Dettler (Colorado Springs, CO/Palmer) combined for 47 digs with Feehan adding seven kills.
The Skyhawks return to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Gunnison against Western State.
