DURANGO, CO - September 26, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team defeated the Cougars of Colorado Christian University in a 5-1 victory this afternoon. The Skyhawks scored four second half goals to secure their sixth win of the season. Fort Lewis improves to 6-2-2 overall and stay at 2-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) after the non-conference game, while the Cougars fall to 2-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the RMAC.
In the 48th minute Sara Egbom (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian) scored her sixth goal of the season off a rebounded of a shot by Jamie MacArthur (Albuquerque, NM/UNM). The second goal of the game ended up being the game-winner, Egbom's fifth of the season.
Jessica Otero (Albuquerque, NM/UNM) scored the Skyhawks' first goal in the 33rd minute off a long kick from the Skyhawks' own side of the center line. She attempted to serve the ball to forward, Hayley Hollenga (Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy) but the wind got under the ball as it sailed just out of reach of the Cougars goalkeeper.
Nichole Kluk (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos) netted the third goal of the game for the Skyhawks in the 54th minute off a crossing pass from Samantha Scales (Cedar Crest, NM/Manzano) who recorded her first career point as a Skyhawk.
Egbom added to the Skyhawks lead when she connected with Hollenga in the 72nd minute. The freshman forwards now have a combined total of 28 points this season.
The Cougars broke the Skyhawk defense with just 17 second left on the clock when Jessica Smith scored her fifth goal of the season for Colorado Christian.
The Skyhawks out-shot the Cougars an amazing 33 to nine, including a 22 to three advantage in shots on goal.
Every player on the Skyhawks roster saw action in the Skyhawks' win.
Fort Lewis returns to action Monday, October 1st at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Dixie State College in St. George, Utah.
