Skyhawks Take Down #4 Incarnate Word

DURANGO, CO - September 30, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team capped a 2-0 weekend a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked #4 Incarnate Word University. The Skyhawks improve to 8-2-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 5-2-1 overall.

Paul Sanchez (Littleton, CO/Columbine) scored the lone goal of the game in the 76th minute off a pass from senior Kieran Hall (Blackburn, Eng./Queens Park).

The Skyhawks had four other shots on goal that were all saved by the Cardinals. Incarnate Word had four shots on goal which Zane Wells (Durango, CO/Durango) stopped to secure his eighth win and fifth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals had three missed opportunities in the dwindling minutes of the second half with two corner kicks and one shot of goal, but the Skyhawks defense held strong and Wells made a save to take their second win of the weekend.

The Skyhawks held the slight 10-9 edge in shots, while the Cardinals were called for four yellow cards compared to the Skyhawks one.

Fort Lewis returns to action Friday, October 5th at 4:30 p.m. against #12 Midwestern State. The game is part of a four-team tournament hosted by the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. On Sunday, October 7th at 10:30 a.m. the Skyhawks take on West Texas A&M, also in Golden.
