Huge 1st Half Propels Skyhawks Over Rangers

DURANGO, CO - January 11, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Regis University Rangers 87-66 Friday night behind a 50-point first half. The Skyhawks improve to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Rangers fall to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Skyhawks wasted no time as they secured their 10th straight win of the season. In the opening 10 minutes of the game the Skyhawks led by as many as nine points. In the final 10 minutes of the first half they continued to pressure and increase their lead further. They went on a 14-0 run in a five-minute span in the middle of the first half to put the Rangers down by 18 with 7:16 remaining in the period. They closed the period exchanging baskets with Regis until the buzzer went off with the Skyhawks ahead by 21. Their 50 first-half points paced them for a 100 point game. They went 21-for-31 from the floor for a remarkable 67.7 shooting percentage. They also went 6-for-12 from beyond the arch and 2-for-2 from the line.

The second half brought more of the same for the Rangers. The Skyhawks stiff defense and lazer shooting paced them for another big win. The Skyhawks led by as many as 34 (67-33) with 12:13 left in the final period. The Rangers plotted a comeback the next five minutes cutting the lead to 22 with 7:18 remaining, but the Skyhawks exchanged baskets the remaining minutes as they secured their sixth conference win of the season.

Skyhawk sophomore Katie Mackey (Eaton, CO/Eaton) broke through with a season-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting. She connected on 3-of-5 from downtown and all but one of her five foul shots. She added five rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes of action.

Audrey George (Longmont, CO/Niwot) added 12 points to her game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. The sophomore added three assists, three blocks and four steals on the night.

Laura Haugen (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) scored 13 points, Lauren McCulloch (Allen, TX/Allen) scored 12 and Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) added 10 points. Haugen added six boards and five assists in the win.

The Skyhawks out-rebounded Regis 38 to 18 and scored 17 second-chance points, compared to just four by Regis.
