DURANGO, CO - January 26, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Western New Mexico University Mustangs 93-48 Saturday night. The Skyhawks improve to 18-1 overall and 11-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and improve their record-breaking winning streak to 15 games. The Mustangs fall to 0-18 overall and 0-11 in conference play.
The Skyhawks score 55 first-half points to and led 55-26 at the break. The Skyhawks took control of the game early and led by as many as 33 points late in the first half. The Skyhawks shot 62.2% from the floor in the first half connecting on 23-of-37 shots. Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) led the way with 12 points in the half, while Lauren McCulloch (Allen, TX/Allen) added 10 points and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line.
The second half brought for of the same for the Skyhawks. They continued to cause Mustang turnovers and capitalized on their opportunities. They led by 41 with 5:41 remaining and finished the game making 10 of the final 16 points in their 15th straight victory.
Rosel finished with a game-high 14 points on 7-for-10 from the floor. She added five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Next week the sophomore should once again lead the nation in field goal percentage after shooting 77.3% this weekend, increasing her season average to 73.1%.
McCulloch added two second-half points to finish with 12, tying her career-high. The sophomore added two assists, two steals and a rebound. Katie Mackey (Eaton, CO/Eaton) connected on 6-of-7 on the evening, finishing with 13 points. She also came down with three rebounds, grabbed two steals and handed out two assists. Laura Haugen (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) added 12 points, while Audrey George (Longmont, CO/Niwot) scored 11. George had possibly the best all-around game by any Skyhawk this season. She added seven rebounds, six assists, six steals and a block in the win.
The Skyhawks once again had great statistics. Besides shooting over 50%, they scored 51 points in the paint, 36 points off of turnovers and 21 fast-break points.
The Skyhawks return to action Friday, February 1st at Noon against CSU-Pueblo. The game was rescheduled to an earlier time and moved to the State Fair Events Center because the CSU-Pueblo gymnasium is under construction.
