Fort Lewis Shuts Out Mesa 5-0

Sanchez scores in the 66th minute

The Fort Lewis men's soccer team put on an impressive display Sunday when they beat conference rival Mesa State 5-0 at Dirks Field.  The Skyhawks thorough dismantling of Mesa State marks the second time the Skyhawks have beaten the Mavericks this season.

The Skyhawks started the action when Euan Purcell scored a on a Tom Settle cross when he punched in the cross off his foot into the lower left corner of the goal.  He followed up the 18th minute goal with another goal in the 27th minute to grab an early two to nil lead.  In the 66th minute Paul Sanchez got into the scoring frenzy with a header off of another Tom Settle cross.   In the 72 minute David Barden scored a header into the top right corner of the net to make the game four to nil.  And finally James Gershfield capped off the scoring with a bullet from the top of the box into the low left corner.

With the victory the Skyhawks move to 10-1-2 and 6-0-2 RMAC. The Skyhawks next match will be at CSU Pueblo next Friday.  The next home match will be on Halloween against Metro State.
