The Fort Lewis College football team had to overcome wet sloppy conditions and a very respectable Western State team to win their first conference game of the season 20-17. With the victory the Skyhawks ended their four game losing streak and notched a "w" at home for the first time since 2006. The win moves the Skyhawks record to 2-4 and 1-3 RMAC, on the season.
As a team the Skyhawks outgained the Mountaineers 364 to 314 with 144 rushing yards. By no means were the Skyhawks perfect on the day but they showed heart, intensity and a will to win. Despite turning the ball over five times and committing nine penalties for 60 yards, the Skyhawks kept their composure. With only a slim three point lead and the game on the line, three times the Skyhawks defense stopped the Mountaineers in the final quarter.
When the horn sounded and the field cleared, a sense of excitement and relief filled the air at Ray Dennison Memorial Field as the Fort Lewis Football program, a program with a long proud tradition, could walk off victorious at home for the first time in two seasons. It may not have been the prettiest or most influential win in Fort Lewis College history, but in the eyes of at least this fan, it may have been my most memorable and satisfying.
