The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks won a very close match over Metro State 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Skyhawks now will play either Incarnate Word or Midwestern State on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Skyhawks beat Metro State for the third time in as many weeks. Jaime Cunningham scored the only goal of the match in the early part of the second half. The Skyhawks and especially goalkeeper Zane Wells held off a furious Roadrunner attack in the last 20 minutes of the match with forward Ola Sandquist of Metro narrowly missing on four shots. Sandquist looked to tie the game with ten minutes left but hit the post fortunately to keep out the equalizing goal. Wells made save after save late in the game to get the victory for the Skyhawks.
With the win the #2 nationally ranked Skyhawks move to 18-1-3 on the season.
