The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks finished their 2008 conference campaign by winning the conference tournament over Metro State 2-0. This Marks the 9th time in 13 seasons that the Skyhawks have won the RMAC tournament and the fourth consecutive year. The Skyhawks season record stands at 17-1-3 and the Hawks are currently ranked 3rd in the nation (NSCAA poll).
The Skyhawks scored in the 9th minute on a Kyle wood shot that deflected off of a defender and over the keepers head to take the early 1-0 lead. Tom Settle was credited with the assist on the play after he dumped the ball back to Wood who drilled an odd angle shot into the net. The Skyhawks took the 1-0 lead into half. In the second half the Skyhawks again scored early in the 6th minute and 51st minute overall, on a Keane Hamilton Blast from just outside the middle of the box. The Metro goalie Ryan Vickery got his hands on the ball but could not stop the blast.
From then on the game got more and more physical but the referees kept control of the contest. Late in the match Metro State finally challenged Zane Wells who was up to the task stopping all three shots on goal he faced. After the match five Skyhawks were named to the all-tournament team; Zane Wells goalie, Jaime Cunningham defense, Tom Settle midfield, Euan Purcell forward and Kyle Wood defense who was also the MVP of the tournament.
The Skyhawks now move into the NCAA playoffs for the chance to compete for the national title. Most likely the Skyhawks will travel to Texas next week for regional competition.
