DURANGO, CO - February 15, 2008 - The nationally ranked #8 Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Adams State Grizzlies 76-53 Friday night in 20th consecutive victory of the season. The Skyhawks tied the program record for wins by improving to 23-1 overall and 16-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Grizzlies fall to 10-14 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
After a rough first seven and a half minutes and just a one-point lead, the Skyhawks went on a 27-7 run to close the final 12 minutes of the first half with a 39-17 lead. Laura Haugen (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) led the Skyhawks with 11 points in the first half on 4-of-5 from the field. She helped lead the Skyhawks to 50% shooting from the floor and 50% shooting from downtown.
In the second half the Skyhawks improved their lead to as many as 31 points and never allowed the Grizzlies closer than 19 points. They shot 56% from the floor and 33.3% from three-point range and held the Grizzlies to 0-for-2 from downtown. Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) led the team with 11 second-half points and six rebounds.
The Skyhawks scored 29 points off turnovers, 32 points in the paint and 33 points off the bench, while shooting 52.8% from the floor. The Grizzlies went 0-for-5 from three-point range, while both teams shot under 55% from the line (Fort Lewis - 52.2%, Adams St. - 54.2%).
Rosel led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds in the game. Audrey George (Longmont, CO/Niwot) also finished with 15 points, while grabbing six rebounds, handing out four assists and making one block.
Haugen, who scored all of her 11 points in the first half, added two rebounds, three assists and one steal. Erin Kerr (Buckeye, AZ/Buckeye Union) also finished with 11 points and handed out three assists. Lauren McCulloch (Allen, TX/Allen) and Katie Bodaness (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) each finished with nine points, while McCulloch added two rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night. Freshman point guard Abby Jackson (Tulsa, OK/Memorial) led the Skyhawks with a game-high six assists.
The Skyhawks return to action tomorrow night against CSU-Pueblo in Whalen Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night is "Think Pink" Night and all fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. With a win tomorrow night the Skyhawks can clinch at least a share of the 2007-08 RMAC Championship for the first time since the 1988-89 season.
