DURANGO, CO - February 23, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team, ranked 17th in the nation, concluded their 2007-08 regular season with a 92-67 win over Western State Saturday night. The Skyhawks improve to 21-5 overall and 16-3 in the RMAC, while the Mountaineers fall to 10-17 overall, 8-11 in conference and out of playoff contention.
Prior to the nets being cut and the RMAC Champions shirts being worn, the 2007-08 Fort Lewis Skyhawks gave the Mountaineers a "Senior Night" welcome. With the Skyhawks four seniors being recognized before tip-off and seeing significant time in their final regular season home game, the Skyhawks recorded their 21st win and 16th RMAC victory of the season, tying a FLC record for conference wins in a season.
The Skyhawks grabbed the lead early in Saturday night's game, but did not open a comfortable lead until the 14:11 mark of the second half, when they lead by 12, a double-digit lead they would keep. The three-pointer which Devon Manning (Kirtland, NM/Kirtland) sunk to give the Skyhawks the 12 point lead was on the front end of a 10-2 run which gave the Skyhawks the 17-point lead. The Mountaineers cut the lead to as few as 10 in the following few minutes, but the Skyhawks had another 11-0 run to grab a 81-58, 23-point lead. The Skyhawks then went on to score 11 of the last 21 points to secure their regular season finale.
The Skyhawks were up only 42-36 at the half, but out-scored the Mountaineers 50 to 31 in the second period.
Manning put on a "Senior Night" show for the FLC faithful who saw him connect on 11-of-17 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line for 28 points. The senior also grabbed four rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Fellow senior Tim Crowell (Long Beach, CA/Cincinnati) scored 11 points and handed out six assists, while Ryan Jameson (Durango, CO/Durango) also added 11 points.
The Skyhawks shot 54.2% from the field, but only 64.3% from the foul line. They scored 30 points in the paint and 27 points off turnovers.
