GOLDEN, CO - March 21, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team dropped two games this afternoon in Golden to the Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers took the first game 6-5 in nine innings and grabbed game two 8-3. The Skyhawks fall to 8-13-1 overall and 4-6-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action, while the Orediggers improve to 19-11 overall and 9-5 in the RMAC.
In game one the Orediggers scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning after the Skyhawks had the bases loaded in the top of the inning. In the top of the ninth the Skyhawks loaded the bases with two outs. With two runners in scoring position, Amber Massey (Rifle, CO/Rifle) was caught stealing at home plate.
Both teams recorded 13 hits in the game, but the Orediggers held the 8-13 advantage in runners left on base. Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) led the team with two RBI and two runs. She went 3-for-5 at the plate with a homerun. Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Georgia Southern) recorded the loss in four and a third innings with five strikeouts and only one earned run.
In game two the Orediggers scored five unanswered runs in the first two innings and sealed the victory three additional runs in the final three innings. The Skyhawks first got on the board with one run in the top of the third inning and tried to rally with two runs in the top of the final inning.
Freshman Brooke Bails (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) led the Skyhawks going 3-for-4 in the nightcap, including a homerun and a triple. She hit in two runs and scored one of her own. Moone recorded the loss in one and two thirds inning letting up four earned runs on four hits.
The Skyhawks and Orediggers take the diamond again tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Golden.
