Mines Takes Two More from 'Hawks

GOLDEN, CO - March 22, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team fell in their final two games to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Saturday afternoon. In  game one the Skyhawks fell 2-4 and in game two the Orediggers took the 3-5 decision. The Skyhawks fall to 8-15-1 overall and 4-8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Orediggers improve to 21-11 overall and 11-5 in the RMAC.

In game one on Saturday the Skyhawks went down 2-0 after three innings, but pulled back and tied the game at two in the top of the fifth. The Orediggers scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth to grab their third win of the weekend. Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Southern Georgia) pitched the complete game for the Skyhawks giving up nine hits and only two earned runs. She also threw five strikeouts.

in game two the teams played three and a half scoreless innings before the Orediggers score a lone run in the bottom of the fourth. The Skyhawks answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 advantage into the bottom of the fifth. Colorado Mines tied the score with two in the bottom of the inning and sealed their fourth victory of the weekend with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Moone also recorded the loss in game two in just one inning of pitching. The Orediggers out-hit the Skyhawks 13-6 in the nightcap and had three pitchers throw at least one inning.

Felicia Cruz (Phoenix, AZ/Glendale CC) went 2-for-3 in game two with a RBI and a run, while Joanna Young (Fontana, CA/Fontana) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

On the day Cruz went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run and Amy Young (Aurora, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) went 2-for-3 in game one with a RBI.

The Skyhawks return home next weekend for a pair of double headers against Western New Mexico on Saturday and Sunday. They will travel to Mesa State on Tuesday, March 25th for a rare mid-week double header at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
