PUEBLO, CO - March 7, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell 68-70 in overtime of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Shootout semifinals. The Skyhawks fall out of the RMAC Shootout and look forward to a birth to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The field of 64 will be announced on Sunday.
With 2:20 left in the overtime period the Skyhawks took a three-point lead. The Thunderwolves then scored the final five points of the game, including a three-pointer at the 1:11 mark to take the victory and advance to the RMAC Shootout Championship game.
The game went back-and-forth the entire game. Each teams' largest lead came in the first half. With 6:06 left in the first half the Thunderwolves led by eight and with 16:41 left in the first the Skyhawks led by five. The game went on to see 10 tied scores and 19 lead changes.
The Thunderwolves held a two-point 34-32 lead at halftime before the game was tied at 61 at the end of regulation. The Thunderwolves held the ball at the end of regulation, but missed three chances for the win in the final five seconds. The Skyhawks had possession at the end of overtime, but a jumper from the left elbow fell short in the final second.
The Skyhawks, the nation's leader in field goal shooting, shot just 40% from the floor. They connected on 7-of-11 free throws and 9-of-19 three-pointers.
Laura Haugen (Fort Lewis, CO/Poudre) led the Skyhawks with 18 points in the game, while Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Audrey George (Longmont, CO/Niwot) scored three and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
The Skyhawks, ranked fourth in the last NCAA Regional poll, now wait for the NCAA to announce their field of 64 Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. The NCAA selection show can be seen live on www.ncaa.com.
