DURANGO, CO - April 11, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team split a Friday afternoon doubleheader with the Metro State College Roadrunners on Aspen Field. The Skyhawks took game one 2-0 and dropped game two 2-7, while moving their overall record to 18-19-1 and their conference record to 14-12-1. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) East Division leading Roadrunners moved to 22-15 overall and 18-10 in the RMAC.
In the opening game on Friday, Skyhawk pitcher Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Georgia Southern) who 11 strikeouts and allowed jsut one hit in the complete-game shutout. She faced 25 batters in seven innings and walked just two to improve her record this season to 8-6.
The Skyhawks scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings kept the Roadrunners scoreless in the final two innings to grab their ninth win in their last 11 contests.
Barb Duran (Denver, CO/Wheatridge) and Joanna Young (Fontana, CA/Fontana) each recorded a RBI in the win, while Young's homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead. Young went 1-for-23 along with Duran, Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) and Amber Massey (Rifle, CO/Rifle). Brooke Bails (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the second game of the day, the Roadrunners opening scoring in the top of the fourth inning with three runs and added another in the top of the sixth before the Skyhawks started a rally with two in the bottom of the sixth. Metro State secured the victory with another three runs in the top of the final inning.
The Skyhawks went 8-for-27 from the plate, while stranding seven runners on base. Mary Oppenhein (Bountiful, UT/Garden City CC) pitched four and 1/3 innings in the loss, while Moone threw two and 2.3 innings.
Young went 2-for-2 in game two and Felicia Cruz (Phoenix, AZ/Glendale CC) went 2-for-4. Peters and Duran both went 1-for-3 with a RBI, while Peters added one of the Skyhawks two runs. Andrea VanLandingham (Denver, CO/Lakewood) recorded the other Skyhawks other run.
Fort Lewis returns to action tomorrow afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. against Regis University. Aspen Field will also play host to a Metro State, Mesa State doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning with the Skyhawks doubleheader to follow.
