DURANGO, CO - April 12, 2008 - Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to give the Fort Lewis College softball team a sweep over the visiting Regis University Rangers. The Skyhawks took game one 5-1 and game two by a final of 8-7 improving their overall record to 20-19-1 and their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record to 16-12-1. The Rangers fall to 22-19 overall and 15-13 in conference play.
With two runners on base and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and a 5-7 deficit starring her in the face, Peters wound up for her second time in as many innings and blasted the ball over the fence in deep center field. The Skyhawks rallied from a 3-7 deficit at the beginning of the final inning with two runs prior to Peters' three-run blast. The senior's homerun did not only win the Skyhawks the game, but broke the FLC record for homeruns in a career. In just two seasons with the Skyhawks, Peters has hit 25 homers breaking the previous record of 24 which was held by Bonnie Matthews (2000-02).
The Skyhawks went down early in game two allowing three second-inning runs. They first got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning before seeing the Rangers score a trio of runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Peters hit her first of two homeruns in the bottom of the sixth inning driving in two runs and bringing the score to 3-6. With another run in the top of the seventh the Rangers saw the victory in sight, but the Skyhawks rally came in the bottom of the seventh with five runs and the victory.
Marriah Jones (Chinle, AZ/Chinle) recorded the win after pitching one inning, allowing one run and striking out one batter. The Skyhawks combined for 12 hits in the game, including three from Peters and two from Felicia Cruz (Phoenix, AZ/Glendale CC), Andrea VanLandingham (Denver, CO/Lakewood) and Joanna Young (Fontana, CA/Fontana).
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Skyhawks scored three runs in the first three innings and held a 3-1 lead after three. They added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings taking the 5-1 decision.
Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Georgia Southern) recorded her second win of the weekend, while throwing 15 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. Brooke Bails (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) went 2-for-2 in the first game with two runs scored and a RBI, while Young also went 2-for-2 with a RBI. Cruz and VanLandingham both went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Cruz also added a RBI.
The Skyhawks are inching closer to the second spot in the RMAC West Division after Adams State dropped at least one game to Colorado Mines this afternoon. With the two wins over Regis the Skyhawks move into the fifth spot in the overall conference standings with the RMAC tournament just three weekends away.
The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday, April 19th at Noon when they host the Adams State Grizzlies. The two teams will also meet the following day with opening pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
