DURANGO, CO - April 20, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the visiting Adams State Grizzlies Sunday afternoon. The Grizzlies took game one 11-4 and grabbed the second 2-0. The Skyhawks fall to 22-21-1 overall and 18-14-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), while the Grizzlies reclaim second place in the RMAC West Division improving their record to 30-15 overall and 19-13 in conference play.
After the opening inning of the first game the Skyhawks knew they might be in trouble as the Grizzly bats came out on fire. The Grizzlies grabbed three runs off five hits in the opening inning and added another four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Adams State adding another run in the third and sixth innings before sealing their victory in the top of the seventh with another two runs on four hits. The Skyhawks scored a runs in the bottom of the first, third, fifth and seventh innings, but fell short in an 11-4 defeat.
The Grizzlies recorded 17 hits, while the Skyhawks dropped 10 hits and tallied three errors. Felicia Cruz (Phoenix, AZ/Glendale CC) went 3-for-3 at the plate with three of the Skyhawks' four runs, while Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) went 4-for-4 with three of the Skyhawks' four RBI. Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Georgia Southern) recorded the loss for the Skyhawks, her first since April 6th at CSU-Pueblo. She threw two complete innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Grizzlies first scored in the second inning and added their second run in the top of the third inning. Mary Oppenhein (Bountiful, UT/Garden City CC) quieted the Grizzly bats in the second game, but the Skyhawks began to struggle at the plate. They recorded just two hits and stranded five runners on base.
Oppenhein pitched the complete game allowing just two earned runs and throwing four strikeouts. Peters and Joanna Young (Fontana, CA/Fontana) were the only Skyhawks with hits in the game.
The Skyhawks played their final homes games of the 2008 season and hit the road for their final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, April 26th when they travel to New Mexico Highlands University. The Skyhawks, currently in third in the RMAC West Division and fifth in the overall RMAC standings, look to make the RMAC Softball Tournament for the first time since 2001 and they will accomplish that if they finish in the top eight in the overall standings.
