Softball Blows Out T-Wolves in Doubleheader

PUEBLO, CO - April 5, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team defeated the hosting CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves 8-2 and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks improve to 12-10-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, while the Thunderwolves fall to 11-13 in conference play.

The Skyhawks exploded with four runs in the top of the third inning of game one and added another four in the next three innings before the Thunderwolves scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Skyhawks cruised in the final inning as they moved their conference to just over .500.

The Skyhawks recorded 16 hits in the win and had five players bat .500 or better. Felicia Cruz (Phoenix, AZ/Glendale CC) went a perfect 4-for-4, while Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) went 3-fo-5 with two runs and a RBI.

Cary Moone (Waterflow, NM/Georgia Southern) recorded the win, her seventh this season, with a complete game pitched and 11 strikeouts.

In game two the Skyhawks opened the game with three runs in the top of the first. They added two in the top of the fourth and sixth, while holding the Thunderwolves scoreless. The Skyhawks had 10 hits on 32 at-bats in the game.

Andrea VanLandingham (Denver, CO/Lakewood) led the Skyhawks with three hits in four at-bats. She also scored two runs in the win. Brooke Bails (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored, while Cruz scored three runs on 1-for-2 with two walks. Amber Massey (Rifle, CO/Rifle) added two RBI for the Skyhawks.

Mary Oppenhein (Bountiful, UT/Garden City CC) pitched five innings and recorded her seventh win of the season. She threw one strikeout and allowed just six hits and no runs.

The Skyhawks take on the Thunderwolves in another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Pueblo at the Rawlings Complex.
