Skyhawks Take One-of-Two on Day Two in Pueblo

PUEBLO, CO - April 6, 2008 - The Fort Lewis College softball team split a pair of games this afternoon with the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves in Pueblo. The Skyhawks fell 1-4 in the first game, but rebounded with an 8-3 win in the second game to conclude their weekend with three-out-of-four wins. The Skyhawks now stand at to 17-18-1 overall and 13-11-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The Thunderwolves are now 17-18 overall and 12-14 in RMAC play.

With three wins over the Thunderwolves this weekend the Skyhawks pull in to third place in the RMAC West Division standings with three weeks left in the season.

In the opening-game loss the Skyhawks scored the first run in the top of the third inning. The Thunderwolves took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. They added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on in the top of the final innings the Skyhawks could not get a runner home to start a comeback.

Felicia Cruz (Pheonix, AZ/Glendale CC) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the game, while Brooke Bails (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek Trails) recorded one hit and the Skyhawks lone RBI.

In the weekend's final game, the Skyhawks started on fire scoring four runs in the opening inning. Fort Lewis added another run in the top of the second before the Thunderwolves got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second and third innings. The Skyhawks added another run in the fourth and the Thunderwolves another in the bottom of the fifth before the Skyhawks sealed their third victory of the weekend in the sixth inning with another two runs.

The Skyhawks recorded 11 hits in 33 at-bats and held the Thunderwolves to five hits in 25 at-bats. Each team recorded three errors in the game.

Cruz and Jenna Peters (Pinole, CA/Diablo Valley CC) both hit homers in the second game, while Bails went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Mary Oppenhein (Bountiful, UT/Garden City CC) recorded the win in the game with four and two third innings pitched. She faced 22 batters and allowed just one earned run.

The Skyhawks return to action Friday at Noon when they host the Regis University Rangers on Aspen Field. The following day the Rangers will take on Mesa State at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. followed by the Skyhawks and the Metro State Roadrunners at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
