The Fort Lewis College Skyhawks men's soccer team beat an up and coming Montana State Billings program Tuesday, at Dirks Field. With the win the Skyhawks record improves to 5-1-1 on the season.
The Skyhawks and Yellowjackets traded goals in the first three minutes of the game with the Skyhawks striking first. On the very first corner kick of the match Sam Morris found Euan Purcell who leaped up higher than his mark, and was able to net his header on the near post side. A mere 44 seconds later Sam Charles of the Yellowjackets was able to catch the defense off guard when Scott Dimon found him on a long crossing pass over the defense. Charles was able to slip the goal past the keeper for the equalizing goal.
The game remained tied through halftime until Purcell netted his second goal of the game on a beautiful short pass in the box by Kyle Wood, in the 64th minute. The Skyhawks barraged the Jackets in the second half with shots but were unable to net another goal but more importantly did not allow another goal securing the victory for Fort Lewis College.
After today's game the Skyhawks will head to Denver on Thursday, to play in the Colorado School of Mines Tournament, where they will take on Incarnate Word Friday and St. Edwards on Sunday.
