October 31st, 2009. Durango, CO. - The Fort Lewis Volleyball team sure gave their fans a spook as they took their RMAC match against Adams State to a close and exciting fifth set. The Skyhawks were able to make it a HAPPY halloween though, defeating the Grizzlies 3-2 (25-22,25-15,19-25,16-25,15-12).
The Skyhawks have swept the last two weekends, improving to 9-16 overall and 7-10 in the RMAC.
Fort Lewis set the tone for the match in the first set going on a 9-3 run to take a 15-11 lead. Adams State would get as close as 18-19 but once again the Skyhawks went on a 3-0 run stretching the lead to 22-18, which they would not relinquish. Fort Lewis took their momentum into the second match making quick work of the Grizzlies 25-16.
The Grizzlies would come out of the intermission fired up taking a quick 6-1 lead which would gradually build to a 16-9 advantage. The Skyhawks were able to close the gap to 19-17 on a service ace by
Adriana Saiz but a determined Grizzly group pulled away to win the third set 25-19. Adams State fell behind 8-11 in the fourth set but eventually went on an 8-0 run, mostly in part to Darcy Jennings-Calkins's 3 kills and 3 blocks. The Skyhawks would fall in the fourth 16-25, forcing a fifth and final set.
The Skyhawks were able to gain their composure and give their fans their money's worth by going on an 8-1 run in the fifth set after it was tied 5-5.
Chelsea Flaming went an impressive 5-5 on kills in the fifth set with help from
Jessica Wilson who had four kills in the final set. The Hawks showed to be too much for the Grizzlies as they won the final set 15-12 and ran their way into the victory tunnel, compliments of the FLC Men's Basketball team.
Flaming led Fort Lewis with 19 kills. Flaming also leads the RMAC with 381 kills for a .374 kill avg. Jessica Wilson followed with 15 kills and a team high 14 digs. Taylor Hilberry tallied 13 and Natalie Reed smashed down 11. Adriana Saiz dished out an amazing 52 assists and 3 kills.
The Skyhawks RMAC Tournament hopes are still alive if they are able win out their two remaining RMAC games against Western State and West Division leaders Mesa State. Both games will be played next weekend on Friday and Sunday at 7:00pm in Whalen Gymnasium.
