Volleyball Upsets Mesa In Season Finale

Skyhawks End Season with Victory
November 6th, 2009.  Durango, CO. -  Flawless. The only word to describe how the Fort Lewis College Volleyball team played last night in ther season finale against Mesa State. The Skyhawks made sure to send off their seniors with a win, and win they did as they swept RMAC powerhouse Mesa State 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-16) Fort Lewis finished their 2009 season 10-17 overall and 8-11 in the RMAC. they also won six of their last eight games of the season.

The Skyhawks started off hot in the first set jumping up 5-1 early in the match. Mesa would come back and tie it up two moer times at 14 and at 20 but a few Maverick mistakes gave the Hawks' a 23-20 advantage. A kill by Natalie Reed and another Mesa error and Fort Lewis took set 1 25-22. The Mavericks came out in set 2 to a quick 3-1 lead but senior Katherine Sumrall served up five points off her serve as the Skyhawks took the lead 10-5. Fort Lewis led most the set until Mesa put down a few kills to take the lead 24-22. Three more errors from Mesa and a kill from Chelsea Flaming helped lift the Hawk's over Mesa 26-24 in the second set to go up 2-0.

In an all too familiar feeling of being ahead two sets to zero, the Skyhawk fans could only expect the game to go to five sets. Fort Lewis had other plans though as they made quick work going up 10-5 in the final set on kills by Taylor Hilberry, Jessica Wilson and Jordan Squiers. Mesa State would once more come back and tie the game at 13-13 but that was as close as they would get to the red hot Skyhawks. The Skyhawks would close out the final set on a 12-3 run to finish off the Mavericks in three games.

"That was a really nice finish," FLC head coach Shelly Aaland said. "Our record doesn't really indicate the talent that we have."

Fort Lewis was led by Wilson who finished with 10 kills and five digs. Hilberry and Reed finished with 8 and 7 kills respectively. Senior Kelly McDonald finished her last game with a team high 12 digs. Fellow senior Katherine Sumrall ended her senior night with two aces and 7 digs.
