Regis outlasts Skyhawk volleyball in five-set game

Fort Lewis drops third consecutive game against RMAC East power

DENVER, Colo. – Regis University (7-4 overall, 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) won a see-saw game against Fort Lewis College (6-5, 0-3) today at the Regis University Fieldhouse.

The Rangers triumphed 15-25, 25-20, 25-14, 13-25, 15-9 in a strange match that saw each momentum swing back and forth throughout the game.

“I think that was the best team we played all weekend,” said seventh-year FLC head coach Shelly Aaland. “The positive part is that we were right there with them.

“The scores were really lopsided,” she added. “It was the fastest match we've played in terms of tempo. That team digs the ball really well and blocks really well, as did we. The level at which we are playing is very high.”

Senior middle blocker Taylor Hillberry continued her spectacular play, which has been consistent through the season's first three weekends. Hillberry led the Skyhawks with a solid .389 hitting efficiency.

“Taylor led us with 18 kills and five blocks,” said Aaland. “She really had a good match, even though [Regis] has good blockers. Offensively, we did okay, hitting .226 as a team.”

Senior outside hitter Chelsea Flaming added 18 digs, 16 kills and a .278 attack percentage.

Regis was bolstered by 12 team blocks, including eight by Lyz Kann.

The Skyhawks open their home slate at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 against Colorado Christian (7-4, 2-0) in Whalen Gymnasium.
