GOLDEN, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team completed a perfect weekend by defeating a pair of regional opponents Saturday at the Marriott/Residence Inn Oredigger Classic.
The Skyhawks (4-0 overall) beat Minnesota St. Moorhead 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) and Augustana 3-1 (25-22, 30-28, 15-25, 25-20). Both schools are members of the tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The NSIC and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which FLC holds membership in, comprise the NCAA Division II Central Region.
Early season tournaments often mark the only head-to-head competition between the two leagues prior to NCAA playoffs.
Senior middle blocker
Taylor Hillberry and senior outside hitter
Chelsea Flaming were named to the all-tournament team; both played key roles in FLC's success.
Hillberry had 13 kills against Moorhead, while Flaming had 13 kills against Augustana.
“Everyone's doing their job,” seventh-year FLC head coach Shelly Aaland told the Durango Herald. “I haven't seen senior leadership like this in years.”
Another senior, setter
Adriana Saiz, had 33 assists against Moorhead and 34 against Augustana.
The Skyhawks return to the Front Range next weekend to compete in the Marriott Invitational, hosted by CU-Colorado Springs. FLC will play four games at that tournament before opening league play at UCCS on Sept. 16.
