Volleyball Wins Home Opener; Defeat Western State 3-1

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Five weeks into the 2013 volleyball season and 12 matches played, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team returned home to play their first home match of the season.  The result was welcoming as the Skyhawks defeated Western State, 3-1.  The win improves Fort Lewis to 2-11 overall and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The Skyhawks won the first two sets of the match, 25-20, 25-21, before dropping set three, 25-22.  They sealed the win with a 25-20 set four win.
 
Three Skyhawks notched double-digit kills with Kristin Stephan and Madi Bickle leading both teams with 11 kills apiece.  Ashley wells chimed in with 10 kills and seven digs.  Stephan led both teams at the net with a .375 hitting percentage.  She also added six digs and two blocks.  Jenna Kinzer recorded a match high 27 digs.  She also served two aces and two set assists.
 
Heather Danny recorded 37 set assists to lead both teams.  She added three kills, three digs and a block.
 
As a team, the Skyhawks hit .134 (48 kills, 27 errors, 157 attacks).  They posted 43 assists, eight aces, 65 digs and six team blocks.
 
Ten of the Skyhawks attacks were blocked by Western State, but the Mountaineers also committed seven blocking errors. 
 
Fort Lewis will play host to Adams State Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Whalen Gymnasium.
