Box Score HILO, Hawaii – Solid shooting and a balanced offensive attack led the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team to an 83-74 win at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Monday night. The Skyhawks are playing three games in the 2013 Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by UHH.
"It was a really good Division II basketball game," said associate head coach
Bob Pietrack. "Anytime you can go on the road in a tough environment with distractions and get a win, its team building for sure."
Four Skyhawks netted double digit points.
Nick Tomsick netted 8-of-17 field goals and 3-of-7 three-point field goals as part of his game high 21 points. He also added three assists and two steals.
Alex Herrera shot 70 percent from the floor and made three-of-five free throws for 18 points. He tallied his second double-double of the season as he chipped in 16 rebounds. Herrera also accounted for all four of the team's blocks.
Wes McKenzie made 4-of-8 field goals and 4-of-7 free throws for 13 points, while
Mike Matthews came off the bench to net 10 points.
Fort Lewis made 50 percent of their shots from the floor (29-of-58), 36.8 percent from long range (7-of-19) and 56.3 percent from the charity stripe (18-of-32).
The game featured 11 lead changes and seven times the score was tied. After a tied game at halftime, 40-40,
JoeBell Austin sank two free throws 36 seconds into the half that gave Fort Lewis a lead they would not relinquish.
The Vulcans (2-2) were led by Joey Rodriguez with 15 points, Derek Owens with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Fort Lewis (3-0) will face Northern New Mexico tonight at 5 p.m. HST (8 p.m. MST), and Tiffin University tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. HST.
