Men’s Soccer Ends Season with 5-4 OT Setback

DURANGO, Colo. – November 5, 2014 – Thirty-four minutes into the first half, the fourth-seed Fort Lewis College men's soccer team held a 3-0 lead over visiting University of Colorado Colorado Springs Wednesday afternoon at Dirks Field.  The Mountain Lions, seeded fifth in the tournament, would come back to net four second half goals and the golden goal to earn a 5-4 win and advance to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference semifinal round.

Luke Lawrence netted the first two goals of the game and his eighth and ninth of the season.  Less than two minutes into the game, he picked up a rebound from Yannis Becker's shot attempt and found the back of the net at 1:56.  At 34:32, Maik Brandt found Becker who took one of his five shots in the game before Lawrence finished for a 2-0 Skyhawks lead.

Just 20 seconds later, Becker fired one in the goal from 20 yards out for a 3-0 Fort Lewis lead they would take into halftime.

UCCS came out of halftime and cut the lead to 3-2 after Matthew Cox scored twice at 50:38 and 61:11.  JR Calhoun knotted the game at 62:04.

Becker tallied his second goal of the game and sixth point when he gave the Skyhawks a 4-3 lead at 64:51.  A scramble in front of the Skyhawks goal resulted in an own goal with 11 minutes left in regulation, 4-4.

James Roberts scored the game-winning goal 3:34 into overtime after a long pass down the middle.

Both teams recorded 15 shots in the game.  Lawrence led both teams with seven shots.  Ryan Schaul made five saves in goal and finishes the season 10-6-0.

The loss ends the Skyhawks season at 11-8 overall.  UCCS improves to 10-8-1 and will play at top seed Colorado Mesa University.
