Skyhawks Open Home Season with Tripleheader

Skyhawks Volleyball Game Day Notes - Sept. 15, 2014

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks made their second straight trip to Texas this past weekend, this time stopping in Kingsville.  Fort Lewis went 2-2 with wins over Adelphia (3-0) and American International (3-1).  The two matches against Adelphia and American International were the first ever in school history.  Fort Lewis suffered setbacks to No. 16 West Texas A&M (3-0) and Eastern New Mexico (3-1).

Senior right side hitter Stephani Sonka was named to the Kingsville All-Tournament Team.  The honor marked the second straight week Sonka earned all-tournament honors.  She was voted to the Midwestern State All-Tournament Team for matches played Sept. 5-6 in Wichita Falls.  

At the Texas A&M-Kingsville Tournament, Sonka led the Skyhawks offensively with 36 kills and a .265 hitting percentage.  She averaged 2.57 kills per set and committed only nine errors on 102 attempts.  She also added six digs and assisted on eight blocks.

Season Highs
The Skyhawks recorded several season team highs last weekend in their two wins over AU and AIU.  Against Adelphia, the Skyhawks posted season highs in attack percentage (.220), kills (37), assists (34), and digs (53) in a three-set match.

Against AIU, Fort Lewis tallied season highs in kills (43) and aces (11) in a four set match.

RMAC Top 10
Lindley Gallegos leads the RMAC in service aces.  In 30 sets this season, Gallegos has served up 20 aces (0.67 aces per set).  

Joining Gallegos for league high honors is Ally Dell'Amico.  Dell'Amico is averageing 5.20 digs per set.  She has recorded 156 digs in 30 sets.

Senior setter Ciara Krening is holding onto the top 10 spot in assists.  Krening has assisted on 135 kills for an average of 5.87 assists per set.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will open their home season this weekend with tripleheader action against Colorado Christian, Regis University and Black Hills State.  The matches will mark the first conference games of the season.

The Cougars enter the weekend with a 5-3 record and are led by Taylor Sturms who is averaging 3.29 kills per set and hitting at a .248 clip.  Jordan Kessler and Jordan Carswell split setting duties for CCU.  Kessler has 156 assists and Carswell has 146 through 31 sets.  Blocking the attacks is Jackie Arnold (24 blocks) and Angela Jurek (20 blocks).  The Cougars went 3-1 in Florida last weekend.

The Rangers went 2-2 at the annual Colorado Premier, hosted by Regis and MSU Denver.  Both losses by the Rangers were against nationally ranked opponents.  RU (5-3 overall), which received votes in this week's AVCA national poll, is led by Caitie Breau (111 kills), Rebecca Sponcil (344 assists), and Maya Kirkeby (138 digs).  Five of RU's matches have been determined in three sets; the Rangers have won four of those five matches.

The Yellow Jackets are on a five match losing skid and are 0-6 in thee set matches.  When going to a fourth set, BHSU is undefeated at 2-0.

Four Yellow Jackets have accumulated 50 or more kills, with Meghan Sipe leading hte team with 74 kills.  Holly Hamlin has posted 20 solo blocks and 33 on the young season, while Chloe Zimmer is averaging 8.73 assists per set.

Skyhawk Volleyball
Head coach Kelley Rifilato begins her second season on the sideline.  Fort Lewis is starting its 45th year of women's volleyball.  The Skyhawks are 574-624-5 all-time and have won four conference titles.
